The mountains in the Ecrins region
Ailefroide is the second most important French site for mountaineering, and this part of the valley has the most visitors of all the Ecrins region.
The route ends upstream from Pré de Madame Carle, near the Cézanne Refuge at 1874m. Here we leave the flat land behind and embark on the mountain paths, which are easy and much travelled in the summer, it’s true, but which are mountain paths all the same, so make sure you have suitable footwear.
The Pré de Madame Carle, at the end of the Vallouise valley, is one of the entrances to the Park (1 800 m in altitude). It gives an easy access to the grandiose domain of glaciers and summits: the Barre des Ecrins (4102 m), the culminating point of the mountain range and Mont Pelvoux (3932 m).
The starting point for two of the main hikes in the valley, towards the two glaciers, and the ascent towards the Glacier Blanc (2542 m) and Écrins (3175 m) Refuges, which are among the most popular in the Alps.
The Barre des Ecrins is the highest peak in the range, 4102 metres in altitude, and is also the highest point in the Dauphiné and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region. For a long time, until 1860, it was even the unknown highest point in France before Savoie became part of France.
The Ailefroide Maison de la Montagne (Mountain House). A welcoming place providing information about the region so that first-time visitors to the site can discover all its wealth and the things to explore and the activities to do. Exhibitions, projections, encounters…
